Should Christians Seek Medical Treatment?

Occasionally, well-meaning Christians fall into the dangerous assumption that taking medication, consulting specialists, or undergoing surgery somehow demonstrates a deficiency in spiritual trust.

They wonder: “If I truly believe God can heal me, isn’t taking this prescription a compromise of my faith?”

The overwhelming testimony of Christian history, biblical teaching, and sound theology gives an emphatic answer: No. Seeking medical care is not a compromise of faith—it is an embrace of God’s provided means.

Matthew 9:12

But when he heard it, he said, 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.'

Jesus Himself assumes the normal, legitimate necessity of doctors for the sick.

1. God Heals Through Means (Common Grace)

God is sovereign over the laws of biology and chemistry. When an antibiotic neutralizes a lethal bacterial infection, or when a skilled surgeon repairs a ruptured heart valve, God is the ultimate Author of that restoration.

Just as God provides daily bread through the labor of the farmer, the baker, and the grocer—yet we still pray “Give us this day our daily bread”—so too God provides bodily restoration through the skill of physicians, nurses, and pharmacologists.

2. Biblical Precedent for Medical Care

• Luke the Beloved Physician: Paul’s close friend, travel companion, and author of both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles was a practicing medical doctor (Colossians 4:14).
• Timothy’s Stomach: Paul did not rebuke Timothy for having stomach issues, nor did he demand only miraculous intervention; he prescribed dietary and medicinal assistance (1 Timothy 5:23).
• Hezekiah’s Poultice: Even after the prophet Isaiah announced divine extension of King Hezekiah’s life, he commanded that a poultice of figs be applied to the boil to bring recovery (2 Kings 20:7).
