He said to them, 'Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.'
In modern popular culture and certain televangelical circles, “faith” is often redefined as an internal mental fuel or energetic force. People are told: “If you just believe hard enough and never let a single doubt cross your mind, you can materialize your healing.”
When healing does not occur, the immediate diagnosis is: “Your faith was too small. You didn’t believe enough.”
This concept of faith is entirely alien to biblical Christianity.
The Object of Faith vs. The Measure of Faith
In Scripture, the power of faith lies not in the strength of the believer’s psychological conviction, but in the greatness of the God in whom faith rests.
Jesus’ illustration of the mustard seed explicitly proves this point: A mustard seed was the tiniest, most minuscule seed known in ancient Palestine. If faith were a mechanical force requiring overwhelming magnitude, a mustard seed would accomplish nothing.
Jesus uses the mustard seed to teach that even the smallest, trembling, imperfect trust placed in the True and Living God is connected to Infinite Omnipotence.
Relief for the Anxious Soul
You do not need to generate a perfect, uninterrupted psychological state of zero anxiety to receive God’s help. Bring your trembling, mustard-seed faith to the Savior who welcomed the father who cried: “I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24).
A Prayer in Trembling Faith
Lord, I do believe; help my unbelief! When physical pain weakens my resolve and anxiety clouds my prayers, anchor my soul not in the strength of my feelings, but in the steadfast love and faithfulness of Christ my King.
