When a Christian family faces a severe medical diagnosis, they are sometimes torn by an unspoken dilemma: Should we spend our energy storming the gates of heaven in prayer, or should we spend our energy researching clinical trials, oncology protocols, and surgical options?

The tragic mistake is treating these two responses as mutually exclusive rivals.

The Unity of Creation and Providence

In biblical thought, God is both the Creator of nature and the Lord of history.

  • When a physician prescribes an antibiotic that disrupts bacterial cell wall synthesis, she is utilizing biochemical properties that God designed in creation.
  • When an oncologist administers targeted immunotherapy, he is awakening biological defense mechanisms that God programmed into the human immune system.

Therefore, when we pray over a patient undergoing medical treatment, we are not asking God to compete with the physician; we are asking God to bless, direct, and prosper the very instruments He has created.

The Holistic Christian Response

  1. Pray with deep fervor and child-like faith for God’s mercy and healing.
  2. Cooperate gratefully and diligently with medical counsel and treatment.
  3. Give all ultimate glory to God for any restoration that ensues, whether through miracle or medicine.

A Prayer Before Treatment or Surgery

Intercession

Almighty Father, Source of all life and healing: We commit our loved one into the hands of the surgical and medical team today. Guide the minds and hands of the physicians. May every medication bring healing, may every procedure be protected, and may Your supernatural peace, which surpasses all human understanding, guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
